About this Scheme

West Bengal is the second-largest inland fish producer in India, with a deep-rooted culture of fish farming in its rural economy. The state fisheries subsidy scheme supports pond renovation, seed production, feed procurement, and marketing infrastructure. The scheme particularly targets small and marginal farmers in districts like South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and Nadia, where fish farming is a primary livelihood for millions of families.

Objectives

  • 1Increase inland fish production to meet growing domestic demand
  • 2Renovate and develop abandoned and derelict water bodies for aquaculture
  • 3Improve seed quality and availability through hatchery development
  • 4Support ornamental fish farming as an additional income source

Eligibility Criteria

  • Existing and aspiring fish farmers in West Bengal
  • Owners or lessees of ponds and water bodies
  • SC/ST and Women beneficiaries (priority)
  • BPL families interested in fisheries livelihood
  • SHGs and cooperatives involved in fish farming

Benefits

  • 50% subsidy on pond renovation up to Rs. 2 lakh per hectare (60% for SC/ST/Women)
  • Seed subsidy: free/subsidized fish fingerlings for stocking
  • Feed subsidy of 50% up to Rs. 25,000 per hectare per crop cycle
  • Aerator subsidy of 50% for oxygen management equipment
  • Support for ornamental fish breeding units up to Rs. 1 lakh
  • Marketing support through Matsya Hubba fish festivals

Application Process

  1. 1Contact the Block Fisheries Extension Officer (BFEO) at the local block office
  2. 2Submit application form with required documents at the block level
  3. 3BFEO conducts pond inspection and recommends eligible beneficiaries
  4. 4District Fisheries Officer approves and subsidy is disbursed via DBT
