Rohu (Indian Major Carps)

Rohu is the most popular fish among Indian Major Carps (IMC), which also include Catla (Catla catla) and Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala). Together, these three species form the backbone of India's freshwater aquaculture and are traditionally cultured in polyculture systems. Rohu, Catla, and Mrigal occupy different feeding niches — column feeder, surface feeder, and bottom feeder respectively — making their combined culture highly efficient. IMCs account for the largest share of India's total fish production by volume.
